چکیده

In this paper, we present a framework for multiterminal video compression (MTVC) that exploits the geometric constraints between cameras with overlapping fields of view, and then uses distributed source coding on corresponding points in two or more views. There are two main parts of the paper a Distributed Motion Estimation (DME) algorithm and a Distributed Source Coding (DSC) algorithm. The novelty of the approach lies in the integration of these two parts. The overall algorithm is developed such that future improvements in either of the two parts can be integrated into it. We start by describing the algorithm for obtaining corresponding points followed by the distributed coding strategy. Our experiments provide a benchmark on the upper bound of the gain obtained through distributed coding of a pair of video sequences, as opposed to coding each of them separately. We also show results on a reallife face video sequence obtained by a pair of overlapping cameras. Through this experimental analysis, we show that at low bit-rates MTVC can achieve very significant savings.

Distributed Video Coding: Principles and Evaluation of Wavelet-Based Schemes

The current scenario considered for video coding and transmission, as assumed by the MPEG standards, uses complex encoding algorithms, including motion compensation and multi-hypothesis rate-distortion optimized procedures, to achieve high compression efficiency. This is the right solution when the encoding is carried out by high performance devices, while the receivers (e.g., handheld devices ...

Multi-Hypothesis based Distributed Video Coding using LDPC Codes

Conventional video coding paradigms are usually built on the assumption that a video stream will be encoded only once but decoded several times. Over the years, this has lead to the development of encoders, which use complex motion-estimation algorithms to reduce the size of the video bitstream. However in applications like distributed sensor networks, cell-phones etc. the encoder has a limited...

Joint Video Source Coding and Distributed Link Adaptation in Wireless Mesh Networks

Real-time video communication over wireless multihop networks has gained significant interest in the last few years. In this paper, we focus our attention on the problem of source coding and link adaptation for packetized video streaming in wireless multi-hop networks when network nodes are mediaaware. We consider a system where source coding is employed at the video encoder by selecting the en...

A Framework for Adaptive Scalable Video Coding Using Wyner-Ziv Techniques

This paper proposes a practical video coding framework based on distributed source coding principles, with the goal to achieve efficient and low-complexity scalable coding. Starting from a standard predictive coder as base layer (such as MPEG-4 baseline video coder in our implementation), the proposed Wyner-Ziv scalable (WZS) coder can achieve higher coding efficiency, by selectively exploiting...

Towards practical Wyner-Ziv coding of video

In current interframe video compression systems, the encoder performs predictive coding to exploit the similarities of successive frames. The Wyner-Ziv Theorem on source coding with side information available only at the decoder suggests that an asymmetric video codec, where individual frames are encoded separately, but decoded conditionally (given temporally adjacent frames) could achieve simi...
